Built by an accountant,
for accountants.

MAO is a growing suite of tools designed to automate the parts of accounting that shouldn't require human time.

The problem

Every year, accountants across the world spend hours on the repetitive mechanics of financial reporting — rolling forward last year's statements, copying figures between columns, mapping a trial balance into the right notes and disclosures. It's repetitive, error-prone, and it adds no value. We built MAO to eliminate it.

The product

MAO automates the repetitive, mechanical parts of accounting — the work that eats hours but needs no judgement. What began as a single roll-forward tool is now a suite of apps spanning financial reporting, accounts payable and financial modelling, with AI used where it genuinely speeds the work up. Every app is included in every plan.

Financial Reporting

Accounts Roll Forward

Upload last year's Word financial statements and get this year's draft back in seconds. MAO moves every current-year figure into the prior-year column, clears the current year ready for new numbers, and updates every year reference throughout the document — in headers, notes, and narrative text alike. Signing dates and other key dates are flagged and replaced with a placeholder so nothing gets carried over by accident, and narrative comparatives (figures like "(2024: £68,361)" buried in prose) are highlighted for manual review. Every change is a genuine Word tracked change, so your existing review workflow — accept, reject, comment — works exactly as it always has.

Assembler

Pulls a company's trial balance and general ledger straight from Xero — or a whole group's, with foreign-currency entities converted into one group currency and intercompany balances matched and eliminated automatically — and builds a proper year-end workpaper in Excel, with a reconciled lead schedule for every material balance, ready for review rather than a blank spreadsheet built from scratch each year. Currently available by invitation.

Accounts Generator

Import a trial balance from virtually any accounting system, together with the Word financial statements you already use, and MAO maps the underlying figures straight into the correct primary statements, notes and disclosures. There's no proprietary format and no rebuilding the report from a template — MAO understands your specific document's structure and applies the mapping directly to it, with every change tracked so you can review and adjust before anything is finalised.

Accounts Checker

A quality-assurance pass over a finished, ready-to-issue set of accounts. Upload the document and MAO checks that totals foot correctly, that cross-casts add up, that note references actually resolve to the right note, and that page and date references are consistent throughout. The output is an interactive version of the whole document — every figure clickable, every check colour-coded, with any issues surfaced in a list at the top before you ever open Word.

Accounts Payable

Inbox Scooper

Watches a dedicated inbox for incoming supplier invoices and turns them into ready-to-review bills automatically — reading the supplier, amounts, dates and line detail from the PDF or email so nothing has to be saved down, forwarded or re-keyed by hand. It hands straight to Payment Run, so bills flow from inbox to approved payment without manual entry in between.

Payment Run

Connects to Xero and produces a report Xero itself doesn't offer: real invoice-by-invoice detail for every outstanding supplier bill, including part payments, alongside the client's opening cash balance and a projected closing balance based on what's planned to be paid. It can run for a single company or several at once, combining them into one consolidated summary with a subtotal per entity and a combined cash position. It's built to hand straight to whoever actually approves payments — a director, not necessarily an accountant — so they can see and approve exactly what they're paying, rather than a "trade creditors" total they don't have the context to interpret.

Financial Modelling

Financial Modeller

Build large, consolidated financial models with complex, interlinked assumptions — the kind of work that usually means wrestling a stack of fragile spreadsheets. The three statements (profit and loss, balance sheet and cash flow) stay linked, and you can run multiple scenarios inside a single model rather than cloning a spreadsheet for each — change an assumption once and every linked scenario and statement moves with it. Export to Excel whenever you need to share it.

The goal is simple: make the routine parts of accounting disappear, so professionals can focus on the work that actually requires judgement. More apps are on the way as we work through the rest of the cycle.

About the founder

MAO was founded by James Mahony, a Certified Practising Accountant with over 15 years of experience in corporate finance, financial reporting, and capital markets.

James has served as both a Chief Financial Officer and Partner of an accounting firm, working with listed and private companies across IFRS and FRS reporting standards. Having prepared hundreds of financial statements and reporting packs, he experienced firsthand how time-consuming and repetitive the annual roll forward process could be.

Determined to improve the way accountants work, James built the first version of MAO to eliminate hours of manual formatting and repetitive tasks. What began as an internal tool quickly transformed the reporting process, dramatically reducing preparation time while improving consistency and accuracy.

Today, MAO combines real-world accounting expertise with modern technology to help finance teams prepare reporting packs faster, reduce manual errors, and focus on higher-value work.
